Description
Wonderfully delicate, van Gogh-like painting of a vase of flowers by Swedish-born post-impressionist Ivan Agueli (1869-1917), dating from 1892. Born John Gustaf Agelii, Agueli converted to Islam and became a wandering Sufi, painter and author. His unique form of post-impressionism blended colors to create depth and distance, innovations that have seen him recognized as a founder of Swedish contemporary art. Stranded in Spain after the outbreak of World War I, the penniless Agueli left to return to Sweden but was killed by a train at a crossing near Barcelona. The philanthropist and artist Prince Eugen Bernadotte of Sweden paid for the return of Agueli's paintings and belongings to Sweden; most of his work is now found at the Swedish National Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Modern Art and the Aguéli Museum in Sala, his birthplace.
