Description
Portrait of a young woman in profile a yellow dress with flower motif against a plain blue background by early Renaissance Florentine artist Alesso Baldovinetti (1425-1499) painted c.1465. The profile view reflects a contemporary interest in classical art, notably antique coins and gems. The decorated sleeve was the height of fashion at the time, often detachable from the gown and of a higher value. The flower pattern on the sleeve is a heraldic design and would have represented the coat of arms of the sitter. Despite this, her identity remains elusive, although some have speculated that she might be Francesca degli Stati, wife of Angelo Galli (d.1459) a minor poet and diplomat from Urbino, whose emblem included palm leaves.
