Description
Two women, each with a poem in their hand. With his back to them is the warrior Soga no Goro, recognizable by the butterfly emblem on the back of his kimono. The woman with the butterfly pattern on her kimono is his mistress; the other woman his brother's mistress. The exchange of poems was an important part of entering into relationships. The poem on the poetry strips that the women hold refers to the rivalry between the two ladies about the love of Soga no Goro.
