Description
Portrait of a man in traditional Hasidic garb - still worn in certain ultra-orthodox Jewish communites today - by Hungarian Jewish artist Isidor Kaufmann (1853-1921), painted c.1910. As well as an extravagant fur hat, or 'kolpik', the young man is wearing a 'bekishe', a long, black kaftan-like jacket, traditionally made of satin or silk. The overall look is said to have been inspired by styles associated with Polish-Lithuanian nobility.
