Description
Striking portrait of Old Testament heroine by French artist Jean-Joseph Benjamin Constant (1845-1902), painted c.1886-French. Judith was an Israelite warrior who beheaded Assyrian general Holofernes. In a 10th century epic poem of the same name, Judith is portrayed as an exemplar of morality, probity, courage and religious conviction who fights to save her people from the corrupt and degenerate Holofernes. She pretends to be seduced by the unsuspecting general, chops off his head and leads the Israelites into a glorious victory over the Assyrians. Not a woman to trifle with, in other words.
